Background:

A series of articles in the newspapers about the plight of Government schools in the twin cities got the members of the Hyderabad Round Table 8 thinking about how they can help in addition to construction of school buildings. Research on Government schools in Hyderabad and Ranga Reddy district highlighted the following challenges these schools faced:
    • Inadequate classrooms
    • Insufficient teachers
    • No cleaning staff
    • No maintenance fund
    • No toilets
    • No security
    • Lack of water supply & electricity
    • High percentage of drop outs
    • Children without notebooks & stationery

The list of problems faced by these schools is endless. The Hyderabad Round Table 8 decided to start a project to help these schools with basic facilities. The HRT 8 joined hands with M.V.Foundation to take up the challenge of improving the Government schools in Hyderabad and Ranga Reddy district. An MoU was signed with the Director and Commissioner of School Education, Dr.Manmohan Singh on 27th October 2003 and Project 511 was born.

The number of schools in Hyderabad district at that point of time was given as 511 and hence the name Project 511
